After spending more than 100 years behind closed doors, a painting by Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh was auctioned for € 13.09 million.
Sotheby’s said the price was a record for the Dutch artist’s work in France, where the auction took place on Thursday.
Sotheby’s estimated that the work of art, entitled “A scene from a street in Montmartre”, would sell for eight million euros.
A French family has owned the painting most of the time since Van Gogh painted it in 1887.
Professionals were aware of this work of art, but it was only listed as a black and white image.
An offer was made for a slightly higher price than this offer on Thursday afternoon, but that sale was canceled due to online auction issues.
The painting is one of a series of works by Van Gogh that he painted while he was staying in Paris with his brother Theo between 1886 and 1887.
The painting represents one of the windmills that dot Montmartre When it was just a village in the northern suburbs of Paris. The Sacred Core Church which marked the area was now under construction at the time.
Van Gogh left Paris and headed south in 1888, and died near Paris in July 1890.
‘Traditional work’
Martin Bailey, an expert on the Dutch painter’s work, told the BBC last month that the painting represented “a transitional work from the Dutch era where he painted in pale and dark colors, and the era that encompassed his lively work he did in French Provence. “
“It was in Paris that Van Gogh discovered the Impressionists, which led him to explore the effect of color,” said Bailey, who writes a blog on Van Gogh in The Art journal.
Bailey added: “What’s interesting is that this painting has been hidden from view since it came out of Van Gogh’s hand.” He added: “The painting was in private ownership, so it was the owners of these collectibles and their friends who were aware of it.”
According to Bailey, the scene depicted in the painting was a short walk from the apartment the famous painter and his brother once lived in.
