On the occasion of International Awareness Day

The Department of Health clarified the causes of bipolar disease, and identified symptoms of bipolar disease, on the occasion of International Awareness Day.

The Ministry of Health’s “Live Health” account, which was documented via the “Twitter” website, shared several interactive documents in which it showed symptoms, complications and risks of the disease.

And the “Live Healthy” account wrote in a tweet, “A person with bipolar swings between two poles. Depression and mania, your knowledge of symptoms and seizures helps you control and balance.”

The Department of Health said on its website that bipolar disorder is a mental health problem and is quite common, adding that one in 100 people are diagnosed with it at some point in their life.

Health explained that the pattern of mood swings in bipolar disorder varies widely from person to person, as episodes of mania and depression often last for several weeks or months, and stressful conditions or situations result in often the onset of symptoms of bipolar disorder.

The ministry added that bipolar disorder is a brain disorder that causes changes in a person’s mood, energy and ability to function, and it’s a mental health issue that affects mood. The mood fluctuates between very high (manic) and very low (depression). The patient also goes through periods of normal mood, also called “manic depression”.

The Department of Health said the exact cause is still unknown, but it is believed that certain factors are a complex combination of physical, environmental and social factors that can lead to the occurrence of the disorder, including:

A chemical imbalance in the brain in the levels of neurotransmitters, which are chemicals responsible for controlling brain function (such as: norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine).

Bipolar disorder is believed to be linked to genetics.

Stressful conditions or situations often trigger symptoms of bipolar disorder.

Extreme psychological stress.

Serious problems in daily life (such as: money, work or relationship problems)

Life-affecting events (such as: death of a close relative)

– Sleep disorders.

The Department of Health has said that a patient with bipolar disorder experiences bouts of depression and episodes of mania, and can sometimes go through periods of normal mood. A person with bipolar disorder also experiences symptoms of depression and mania together (mixed state), for example hyperactivity with depressed mood, and during the depression phase, symptoms may include the following conditions:

Feeling sad, hopeless, or irritable most of the time.

Lack of energy and difficulty concentrating and remembering things.

Feeling empty and losing interest in daily activities.

Feelings of guilt and hopelessness.

Feeling pessimistic about everything.

– lack of self-confidence.

Experience hallucinations and illogical or disturbed thoughts.

– Anorexia.

Difficulty sleeping.

To wake up early.

Suicidal thoughts

The Department of Health has said that during the manic phase, a person with bipolar disorder may experience other symptoms, which may include the following:

Excessive feeling of extreme happiness and excitement

Speak with great speed and excitement.

Feel full of energy.

Easily distracted

Great self-confidence

Insomnia and less need to sleep

Suddenly change from happy to aggressive

Sense of self-importance.

Feel full of new ideas and important projects.

Hallucinations and disturbed or illogical thoughts.

Not feeling the need to sleep and eat.
