Save your contacts
If you are an Android user and use Google apps a lot, make sure to back up your contacts. If your contacts weren’t already syncing with your Gmail account.
Back up your messages and call logs
Just like your contacts, you can also back up your messages and call logs. Your messages can be backed up using a third-party program such as SMS Backup and Restore. You can create a backup of your messages by saving them to Google Drive and you can restore them from there to your new phone. The same app can also be used to save your call logs.
Back up your photos, videos and other media to the cloud or to an external storage device
You can opt for cloud backup with Google Photos, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, DropBox, or any other reliable cloud service, or you can physically transfer the media files to an external hard drive or SSD.
Log out and delete all accounts before factory reset
Factory reset will erase everything on the smartphone but will not log you out of your Google account (s). So make sure to sign out of all Google accounts and other online accounts before going to factory reset. You can check which accounts are connected by searching for “Accounts” in the phone settings or by going to “Accounts” in the Gmail settings.
Find and remove microSD cards
Remove microSD cards, if using them, from your phone. But first check that the data it stores is safe inside.
Don’t forget to remove the SIM card
This is something you don’t need to tell yourself, but don’t forget to remove your SIM card.
Create a backup for WhatsApp
To save your WhatsApp conversations before switching to a new phone, create a chat backup from the Google WhatsApp settings. You can choose whether or not to include certain files in your chat. Then when you do a fresh install of WhatsApp on your new device, you can restore the chat backup.
Check if your phone is encrypted
Before doing the factory reset, check if your Android phone is encrypted. Otherwise, you can do it manually through the phone settings. Encryption makes it very difficult for someone else to access data on your phone after a factory reset. Most new Android phones are already encrypted, but older phones are not encrypted.
Factory reset is a must
Now when you are sure that you have backed up all the important files on your phone and that they are also encrypted, you can do a factory reset. Look for “reset” in the phone settings and select “wipe all data (factory reset)”. This will erase everything on your smartphone.
