Rooibos tea, also known as red tea or red bush tea, has been linked with a host of health benefits.
Researchers suggest that drinking herbal teas may reduce the risk of serious chronic illnesses.
Rooibos tea is made from the leaves of a shrub called Aspalathus linearis, which is commonly grown on the west coast of South Africa. Herbal tea is packed with properties that researchers believe can strengthen the body’s defenses against heart disease and cancer. Evidence of health benefits has been included in a review by the Cancer Charitable Society of South Africa.
The review said: “Rooibos tea contains extremely high levels of antioxidants – powerful substances that fight free radicals in the blood and keep the body healthy and strong.”
Free radicals are known as unstable atoms that can destroy cells and cause disease and aging. It has been linked to a wide range of chronic diseases, such as cancer and diabetes.

Additionally, research has shown that six cups of Rooibos tea per day increases the antioxidant glutathione. Glutathione plays a protective role against the development of cancer.
Rooibos tea has also been shown to relieve high blood pressure in some cases.
Research indicates that drinking sage appears to inhibit angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), which causes blood vessels to constrict and increase blood pressure.
The high flavonol content in Rooibos tea also supports the cardiovascular system due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, as well as its positive effect on blood fats, including cholesterol.
Swedish researchers found that after 30 and 60 minutes of consuming 400ml of Rooibos, ACE activity was significantly inhibited.
The research team could not prove the same effect with green and black tea in a group of 17 healthy volunteers who took part in the study.
To maximize the health benefits of drinking Rooibos tea, a healthy lifestyle is essential.
