New study reveals what can reverse damage caused by lack of sleep in people with insomnia!

Large study finds that people with insomnia can reverse the damage caused by lack of sleep if they take a brisk walk every day.

Lack of sleep is linked to health problems such as stroke, heart disease, and cancer. But research has shown that moderate activity seems to “neutralize” the effects of insomnia.

Researchers followed 380,000 middle-aged Britons for 11 years, monitoring exercise levels, sleep quality and the number of deaths.

They found that not getting enough sleep and not exercising independently increased the risk of death.

But adults who sleep poorly significantly reduce their risk of disease if they are active.

The unwanted effects of poor sleep were offset when participants did 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week recommended by the World Health Organization – the equivalent of 20 minutes of brisk walking or jogging per day.

During the study period, 15,503 participants died. Deaths were more common in people who slept poorly and exercised. And people with inactive insomnia had a 57% higher risk of premature death than people who slept well – they were 67% more likely to die from heart disease and 45% more likely to die from cancer.

It’s not yet clear why poor sleep is linked to health issues, but insomnia is linked to chronic stress that can lead to inflammation of the arteries and heart failure.

The study’s authors, from the University of Sydney, concluded: “Levels of physical activity above the WHO recommendation appear to eliminate most of the unfavorable associations with poor sleep and mortality. Our results support the value of interventions targeting both physical activity and sleep for improving health. “

Participants in the study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, were on average 55 years old and almost half had unhealthy sleep patterns.
