Specialists from the Environment Agency of the Sultanate of Oman have succeeded in discovering and documenting a tree unique in the Arab world, after its discovery in several areas of the Wilayat of Al Mazyona in the governorate of Dhofar, according to the website of the Oman News Agency.
This tree was spotted earlier last year and has been researched by a specialist team from the Sultanate of Oman Environment Agency.
The agency stressed that “it is a flowering tree which attracts bees, which grazes and which plays a major role in the ecosystem of the region”.
Environment Agency wildlife specialist Ali Salem Akak pointed out that the plant biodiversity of the Sultanate is always fascinated by what is new and unique in the unregistered and classified plants of the region.
Botanists in the region were contacted, as the agency said it had “confirmed that it (the tree) had not been previously reported in Gulf countries.”
Plant expert from the Royal Gardens of Edinburgh in the UK was also contacted, interested in documenting wild plants in Arab countries through his research and recording of plants and trees, Tony Miller, who confirmed that this is a new record of this tree in Arab countries.
The tree’s presence in Pakistan and Sri Lanka has been reported earlier.
Samples of the tree were taken for research and study, and an attempt to cultivate it, which met with great success.
Ali Salem Akak said authority specialists, in cooperation with the Oman Botanical Garden team, are in contact with international organizations to register this tree, and scientific research is being prepared to fully study it. in order to classify it as the Arab world officially.
