duration / You may have heard of “PrintNightmare”, a vulnerability in the Windows Print Spool service that could allow hackers to take control of your computer under certain circumstances. After raising concerns about the issue last week, Microsoft has officially released a patch that fixes the issue and the company is urging all Windows users to install it as soon as possible, Digitartlends reports.
However, not everyone may know how to get the fix to keep your computer safe when sending documents from your computer to the printer through the Windows Print Spool service. We’ve got you covered with a quick guide on how to fix PrintNightmare Windows 10 issue right now.
Some researchers have already reported additional issues with Microsoft’s express solution. However, Microsoft continued to explain technical aspects of the fix in an effort to allay concerns about a fix that caused issues with Zebra printers, saying an additional fix will be rolled out soon. So you will probably want to install the upcoming fixes that Microsoft offers using a method similar to the one below.
To get started you will need to visit the Start menu and then click on the Settings icon on the left side of your screen, from there you will be taken to the Windows 10 Settings app, where you will need to click on Update and security followed by Check for updates. Windows 10 will then start checking for updates.
If you are using the latest version of Windows, which covers the May 2021 update (21H1) to the May 2020 update (20H1), you will need to make sure that KB5004945 appears in the Windows Update list to fix PrintNightmare. This is the automatic fix for Windows 10 Home, Pro, and other versions of Windows 10 that fixes the problem.
Let Windows 10 download and install the update, after a few minutes you will be asked to restart your computer using the Restart Now button. Once you restart things will be fixed.
If you are using an older version of Windows 10 November 2019 Update for Windows 10 (also known as 19H2), you will see KB5004946 as a fix. For all other versions of Windows 10 (Windows 10 April 2018 Update, also known as version 1803), you should see KB5004949 as a fix in Windows Update. Either way, your computer will be installed immediately and will require a quick restart.
In the rare event that you do not see the fixes mentioned, you can download the fix manually by visiting the Microsoft Update Catalog. Just make sure to check the KB version.
Again, KB5004945 applies to all newer versions of Windows 10, while KB5004946 applies to Windows 10 November 2019 update. Finally, there is KB5004949 for Windows 10 April update. 2018, or version 1803.
Once you click on the download button next to these updates in the catalog, a pop-up window will appear. Click on the MSU file you see linked and allow it to download to your computer. Once downloaded, you can click on the file (directly from your browser window) and launch and install Windows. You will see that it will check for the update, then install it and restart your computer
