Today, Tuesday July 13, the Arab world is witnessing an astonishing scene of the conjunction of Venus and Mars, so that they cannot be separated with the naked eye, 50 minutes after sunset, which is a great opportunity for photography.
In a report, the Jeddah Astronomical Society revealed that Venus will be visible as a shining silvery point of light, while Mars may not be noticed at first glance at the lower left of Venus (for the observer) due to the glow of Venus, but they will not be very close, and they will only be separated by half a degree.
She says the difference in brightness between the two like Venus (-3.9) and Mars (+1.8), a six degree difference makes Mars 200 times darker than Venus so maybe a twin will be needed to see the red planet, and when observing through a telescope, they will appear in the same field of view.
Mars appears very weak because it is located almost on the opposite side of the Sun from Earth at around 372 million km. Venus is 213 million km away and is twice the diameter of Mars and is surrounded by permanent cloud cover that excels at reflecting sunlight. Whether it’s faint or not, it’s important to see the gradation of Mars and how its brightness will be when it appears at the meeting next year 2022.
In general, at the time of their conjunction, Venus and Mars will be pointedly directed towards the Heart of the Lion, and as a result, Venus will be associated with the Heart on July 21, 2021, since it will pass through 1.2 degrees north of this then, on July 29, 2021, Mars will meet the Heart of the Lion and pass 0.7 degrees north of this star, the brightest star.
All the planets revolve roughly in the same plane. When we look at them from Earth, they seem to overlap every now and then when they are in our field of view, and we may not think about the distance between the planets from each other because our eyes cannot feel the depth of more than a kilometer.
Venus and Mars have apparently moved closer by day to day for weeks after Venus returned to the evening sky after its conjunction with the Sun on March 26, 2021, and tonight they will appear to be almost touching each other.
Note that Venus and Mars will be as close as possible on this day and even a few nights from now until Wednesday, and this is all just an illusion in the crosshairs as the planets are separated by millions of kilometers, but they appear to be close to each other from our perspective on Earth only.
