Google announced that it is developing a new way for Google Photos fans to backup their photos from their desktops – and it’s the only way to automatically sync desktop photos with the cloud service starting on the 1st. October.
Now anyone who sees photos from their PC automatically sees the Google Backup and Sync desktop app, available for Windows and Mac. But Google is now moving away from the app in favor of a new “desktop engine,” which will act as an all-in-one client for consumers and business users.
The current backup and sync app returned in 2017, but a new website “Backup and sync users will start requesting a change in the coming weeks for a desktop driver, we recommend doing so. ‘by September 2021 “.
“In the coming weeks, Backup & Sync users will see a product notification announcing that their files need to be always in sync,” Google said. In other words, this is a mandatory change if you want to automatically back up your desktop photos (and other files) to Google’s cloud services.
While this change might be a bit painful in the short term, it can help simplify a very confusing system for Google Photos and Google Drive users. Both cloud storage solutions no longer support bulk photos – as of September 2019, photos uploaded to Drive will no longer automatically copy to Google Photos (and vice versa).
Despite this, the current backup and sync app does not allow backing up confusing photos and videos. directly For google images, by driver only. But Google says the new “Desktop for Drive” app will include this option for Google Photos users and a few new things, including dark mode.
The new application is to update and rename “Drive File Stream”, a separate backup application for business users. Google says Drive for Desktop “will combine the best and most useful features for Drive streaming, backup and sync,” making it a one-stop-shop for customers and business users.
How does this work?
Google’s simplification of desktop sync clients in a single app is driven primarily by a desire to help business users, rather than providing a significant advantage to Google Photos and custom drivers.
After all, Google had the Drive app, which was later split in 2017 into “Drive File Stream” and “Backup and Sync”. It doesn’t make things easier for business users, but Google said many of them ended up using both apps and created some confusion.
As a result, all Google Drive and Photo users will have to go through the new “Drive for Desktop” sync app by the end of September. While this might seem like a drastic change, Google is saying “Your files are unaffected” and this is just an update on how you access and sync.
So how do you make the change? For now, there is still a way for consumers to radically change who Google Photos uses – instead, Google says it will kick off the transition starting July 19. “Backup and synchronization”. How Users Provided Notifications and Help Go to “Drive for Desktop”.
This is definitely something to add to your reminders, however, starting October 1, you will no longer be able to log into Backup and Sync. To automatically back up your photos and desktop files to Google Photos and Drive, you need to access “Drive for Desktop”. Sigh, thank you Google.
