ad Twitter shuts down Fleets, a tweets feature with full screen mode in addition to the calendar that expires after 24 hours
And the temporary tweet format is on the way out due to low usage after its widespread launch just eight months ago.

The platform introduced Fleets in November 2020. The feature allows users to post fullscreen photos, videos, reactions to tweets, or plain text that disappears after 24 hours.
The fleets arrived years after Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram offered similar options to their users.
Starting August 3, users will instead see Active Spaces – Twitter’s live voice chat rooms – at the top of their timeline.
And the place where traditional tweets are written is updated with more camera editing features from Fleets, such as text formatting and GIF stickers on photos.
The platform’s decision to cut fleets is an admission that the feature hasn’t worked and the company has yet to figure out how to get people to tweet more.
The platform has struggled for years to get new users to post regularly and not just consume other people’s tweets.
The Fleets feature was a copy of the Stories feature. It is the popular social media format designed by Snapchat and popularized by Instagram.

Twitter closes the Fleets feature
“We were hopeful that Fleets would help more people join the conversation on the platform,” the company said in a statement. But we haven’t seen an increase in the number of new people joining the conversation through Fleets as we had hoped since. That we have created fleets for everyone.
The current removal of the feature is surprising as the platform rolled it out to everyone in November and started testing ads between fleets last month.
At the time, the company described the ads as an experiment with a group of advertisers. It is not clear if these full screen ads will appear in other parts of the app in the future.
“If we don’t evolve our approach and discontinue features from time to time, we aren’t seizing opportunities enough,” the company added. We continue to create new ways to engage in conversations, listen to comments, and change direction when there’s a better way to serve people who use Twitter.
