A new study has suggested that the cannabis plant is native to northwestern China, not Southeast Asia as is currently the case, according to a report released by CNN.

And cannabis has a narcotic effect, and it’s one of the plants that causes hallucinations, and the fabricated image of it is known as “marijuana”. to find the place where the genetic origin of this plant species first appeared in millions of years.

According to the new study, hemp was one of the first plants cultivated by humans and has a long history of use in textiles and food, and that humans first started cultivating it in the Neolithic (10,000- 3000 BC

The study, published in the journal Science Advances, was prepared by a team led by researchers in Switzerland and China who assembled 110 complete genomes, spanning a range of different wild plants that grow in nature, as well as varieties. domesticated and modern cannabis hybrids. and the psychoactive forms of the plant, known as “marijuana”, with higher levels of THC.

The genomic analysis of these samples led to separate the samples into four major groups, including basal hemp, found in China and the United States, as well as the “ancestors of cannabis and marijuana” cultivated in ancient times – two of the other major groups – separated from basal hemp about 12,000 years ago – suggesting that this species had been cultivated by humans around this time.

The study added that the cultivation of these species by humans coincides with the dating of ancient artifacts, including ancient pottery pieces in southern China, Taiwan and Japan from the same period.

The researchers noted that modern Chinese cannabis strains, whose properties have been altered by human cultivation, are closest to the extinct wild “cannabis ancestors”.

Research shows that after cannabis was domesticated in the Neolithic Age, it slowly spread across Europe and the Middle East during the Bronze Age.

The study indicates that the first record of the emergence of cannabis in India dates back around 3000 years, when this type was probably introduced from China along with other cultures, before reaching Africa in the 13th century and then in Latin America in the 16th century, as it happened in North America at the beginning of the 20th century.

a little bit of light

According to the report, the new study sheds light on the long-standing mystery about where and when different types of cannabis containing higher levels of psychoactive compounds were cultivated and used by humans.

Although these plants have been cultivated for centuries, the ancient and wild varieties had low levels of THC and other psychoactive compounds.

And many historians have spoken of the history of marijuana use in the plains of ancient Central Asia, but in their research they relied on a single text written by the Greek historian Herodotus at the end of the first millennium. Before our era.

In 2019, excavations of a 2,500-year-old cemetery in western China revealed the oldest clear evidence of human cannabis use due to its psychological effects.

However, it is unlikely that marijuana was smoked the same way it is smoked today, and was often burned like incense in an enclosed space to inhale the fumes.
