The African Football Confederation (CAF) has supported the idea of holding the World Cup every two years instead of four, stressing at the same time that it is moving forward with the project to organize the Super African League, according to a statement released yesterday.

The CAF Executive Committee meeting, chaired by South African Patrice Motsebe in Morocco at the weekend, supported a Saudi proposal that had been put forward at the last meeting of the International Gaming Federation “FIFA”, aimed at change the organizational rhythm of the World Cup.

Since Uruguay hosted the first tournament in 1930, the largest singles sporting event has taken place every four years, with the exception of a World War II hiatus.

The World Cup qualifiers and tournament matches are financial inroads, in part due to television rights, but the increased frequency would give CAF a much needed financial boost.

However, Motsebe did not respond to concerns that the biennial World Cup, in addition to the Africa Cup of Nations, would result in a busy schedule.

One possible solution is to combine qualifying for both tournaments, as happened in qualifying for the 2006 and 2010 World Cup and the Nations Cup.

The CAF Executive Committee instructed the Club Competitions Commission to expedite the feasibility study for the establishment of the African Super League, without much detail on the proposed competition, which was first proposed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino in a meeting with CAF officials. in Morocco last year.

At the time, Infantino had suggested that 20 clubs participate permanently, in exchange for qualifying other clubs through regional competitions.

Last April, the European Union for the game “UEFA” and “FIFA” had “aborted” the idea of launching the European Super League less than 48 hours after its announcement, after the withdrawal of the nine founding clubs other than the clubs from Real Madrid, his compatriot Barcelona, and Juventus of Italy who are still attached to the project.
