Japanese researchers have set a new world Internet speed record of 319 terabytes per second.
A team of researchers from the Japan National Institute of Information and Communications Technology used advanced fiber optic technology with a quad-core optical fiber with a standard outside diameter of 0.125mm to perform a speed test.
This broke the previous record of 178 terabytes per second set by engineers in Japan and Britain a year ago.
To achieve the record speed, the researchers built an experimental recycled transmission loop by combining two types of rare earth fiber amplifiers.
The combination of erbium-thorium fiber amplifiers and distributed Raman amplification enabled long distance transmission of over 3,001 kilometers.
According to “Sputnik”, the Japanese institute stressed that it is of great importance to show how the new fibers can meet the apparent “explosive surge” demand of new data services.
The research institute further noted that the result of the latest Internet speed test will help to realize new communication systems, which can support “bandwidth-hungry services”, adding that they will continue to explore ways to increase the “weak” transmission capacity.
