Filipino weightlifter Hedlin Diaz awarded his country the first Olympic gold in history, after winning the 55kg category today, Monday, at the Tokyo Summer Games, which will be held until August 8.
Diaz, 30, lifted 224 kg (97 snatches and 127 nets), setting an Olympic record, ahead of China’s Qiuyun Liao (223 kg) and Kazakhe Zulfia Shenshanlu (213).

Diaz has already secured a place in her country’s sporting history, as boxing icon Manny Pacquiao as the only woman in the sprawling archipelago to win an Olympic medal, when she surprisingly won a medal. silver five years ago and ended the 20-year medal drought in the Philippines.
Diaz has spent the past year and a half training in Malaysia due to health restrictions linked to COVID-19, so she has dedicated herself to chasing an unprecedented gold medal in her fourth, and may -be last, Olympic Games.
