The United Arab Emirates announced on Tuesday the creation of a “space cooperation” group comprising 11 Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, Algeria and Morocco, with the first project of developing a common satellite to monitor the environmental and climate change.

The Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, oversaw the signing of the charter for the creation of the “Arab Space Cooperation Group” as part of the activities of the second edition of the “World Conference from space “. “in Abu Dhabi.

Sheikh Mohammed wrote on his Twitter account: “We have witnessed the signing of a charter to establish the first Arab space cooperation group which includes 11 Arab countries, and its first projects will be a satellite that Arab scientists will work from. from here from the United Arab Emirates. “

He continued, “We named the satellite 813 … which is the date of the beginning of the prosperity of the House of Wisdom in Baghdad during the reign of al-Ma’mun” in the 9th century AD to the Abbasid period.

According to a statement released by the Dubai government’s media office, the satellite will be “for Earth observation and environmental and climate change purposes,” adding that “a number of engineers and young Arabs from countries that have signed the charter to launch the first group of its kind in the Arab world will work on the design and manufacture of the satellite. ” “.

The statement did not specify the Arab countries, but a video recording released by the UAE Space Agency showed representatives in front of the flags of their countries during the signing of the charter, including Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Morocco. , Lebanon and Kuwait.

The UAE, which has big ambitions in the space field, hopes to become one of the first countries in the world and the first in the Arab world to carry out a program to explore the planet Mars.

In 2014, the United Arab Emirates announced its intention to launch the “Amal” probe to Mars by 2021, which will be the first Arab robotic probe.

The United Arab Emirates announced last month that the first UAE astronaut would depart on a mission to the International Space Station on September 25.

Saudi Prince Sultan bin Salman Al Saud was the first Arab astronaut when it was launched aboard an American space shuttle in 1985.

Two years later, Syrian pilot Muhammad Faris spent a week at the Soviet Union’s Mir space station.
