The Russian president’s special envoy for climate issues, Ruslan Edelgirev, said electric cars are so far more efficient than hydrogen cars, but no one knows who the future is for.
Edilgirev added, in an interview with the Russian “Novosti” agency, that he was aware of some studies carried out by the world’s largest car manufacturers, which show that electric cars are now more energy efficient than their competing with hydrogen. However, the latter “has a number of advantages, especially when it comes to public transport”.
The Russian president’s envoy on climate issues stressed that electric vehicles and those that use hydrogen will continue to coexist, but at the same time, no one is questioning the future of hydrogen energy in industry.

The Russian government approved a hydrogen energy development plan last August, setting the main objectives, means and measures to develop this energy in Russia until the years 2024, 2035 and 2050.
“The main driver for the development of hydrogen energy is the increased demand for low-carbon energy carriers, which is recognized not only by Europe, but also by Russia, which has given priority to this ambitious plan” , stressed Edelgirev.
The plan sets hydrogen export targets with an export volume of 200,000 tonnes by 2024, then 2 to 12 million tonnes by 2035 and 15 to 50 million tonnes by 2050 .
“It may depend on whether external players have clearly defined their long-term hydrogen needs (the EU, US, Japan and some other countries have their own hydrogen strategies), rather than domestic consumers “said Ruslan Edelgirev.
As the volume of future demand begins to appear in the Russian domestic market, the logical goals we will seek in this area will become clear.
