In a study published in Nature Food, researchers looked at 5,853 foods in the American diet, measuring their effects in minutes of life gained or lost.
“We wanted to do a health assessment of the beneficial and harmful effects of food on the whole diet,” Olivier Juliette, professor of environmental health sciences at the university and senior author of the article.
The team is based on a study called the Global Burden of Disease, which measures morbidity rates related to a person’s food choices.
The study found that consuming foods such as nuts, legumes, seafood, non-starchy fruits and vegetables on the other hand has positive health effects.
Juliet said the index looks at foods that increase or decrease life expectancy, but it’s not as easy as trying to eliminate harmful food choices with more beneficial foods.
“The index is primarily there to aid in the selection and use of calories consumed daily to achieve minimal change and to obtain the maximum health and environmental benefits from our nutritional experience.”
The goal, he said, was to choose better foods, not to spend time doing math.
“Is this the ultimate metric that will tell you exactly what you’re going to eat tomorrow and completely determine your life expectancy? … It’s a useful metric that can help you make better choices and make it easier to identify and identify? making small changes in our diet, ”he explained.
It’s not as easy as figuring out what we eat to live to be 100, said Marion Nestlé, professor of nutrition and public health at New York University. She told CNN the numbers may not be completely reliable.
