Employees at Nike headquarters in Oregon took a week off to support their mental health, before returning to the office in September.
Until Friday, the American company will be “closed” to give respite to employees after a difficult year.
“Take the time to relax and spend time with your loved ones,” said Matt Marazzo, the company’s head of ideas, in a letter to employees.
The two Bumble LinkedIn companies have already taken similar steps.
A growing number of employees have reported feeling fatigued as the pandemic continues and many continue to work from home.
Large US companies such as Apple and Uber have also postponed plans to return employees to their offices as the number of infections rises in the United States.
“Don’t work,” Marazzo told Nike employees last week on LinkedIn, adding that the past year had been “difficult” and they had “been through a traumatic event.”
“It’s not just a week off for the team… It’s a recognition that we can prioritize mental health and also be able to get the job done,” added Marazzo.
According to reports, the move also reflects the fact that Nike has had a successful year, in which sales increased and the value of its shares rose by 20%.
The Bumble dating app has told its 700 employees around the world to stop working in June and focus on themselves.
A senior Twitter executive revealed that company founder Whitney Wolf Heard took the plunge “after properly acknowledging our collective fatigue.”
LinkedIn also gave its employees a week off in April. And Citigroup announced in March that it would make Fridays free for meetings on the “Zoom” application, to counter fatigue linked to the epidemic.
