General Motors, the parent company of Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac and Buick, has announced that it has temporarily halted production at six of its North American factories due to a global chip shortage.
General Motors is the latest major automaker to be hit by a basic computer chip shortage.
Four of the company’s plants in the United States are affected, and four more in Mexico and Canada sit idle for several weeks as the company struggles to increase its supply of chips.
The production shutdown affects the company’s most profitable vehicles, including pickup trucks and SUVs.
A company spokesperson said, “During downtime, we repair and ship incomplete vehicles from several affected factories to dealerships to help meet high customer demand for our products. “
“Although the situation is still very complex and changing,” he added. However, we remain convinced that our team can continue to seek innovative solutions to reduce the impact on vehicles with high demand and limited capacity.
Affected vehicles include the Chevrolet Silverado, Cheyenne, Traverse, Equinox, Express, GMC Acadia, Sierra, Savana, Terrain, Canyon, Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6.
This is the second time the company has to announce a temporary plant shutdown in response to the chip shortage. The automaker stopped working at several factories for two weeks in April.
