It seems to many people that the scheduled alarms feature of Google Clock is completely disabled due to a bug that prevents preset alerts from going off. On the back of this issue, the Play Store listing has now seen a deluge of one-star ratings from disgruntled users.
[Update 09/06]: Google released a statement via a thread on / r / GooglePixel, it is possible that the broken Google clock issue is the result of Spotify integration. A temporary solution is to simply switch to one of the device’s default beeps to ensure that scheduled alarms go off on time:
We’re sorry you encountered this issue and thank you for reporting it. We have identified a fix and will release it soon. Meanwhile, you can change the alert sound setting to set it in the device sound.
A growing thread on the / r / GooglePixel subtitle notes that many devices are skipping their morning alarms or not showing “soon” on their Pixel devices. The issue also displays any previously scheduled alarms as ‘missed’ shortly after the previously mentioned alarm has been scheduled to go off (via Android salad).
According to the large number of negative reviews and 1 star remaining in the Play Store listing for the Google Clock app, these disabled alarms have been affecting people for quite some time now. However, the problem doesn’t seem to be limited to Pixel devices alone. Complaints come from device owners of all major OEMs, including OnePlus, Samsung, and Xiaomi.
Most of the complaints come from people who are frustrated that Google Clock alarms are broken and fail to go off, resulting in late awakenings and contempt for employers. Despite stories being told, in the original Pixel title series, some mentioned that putting the phone face down in “Flip to Shh” mode seems to be the reason for the missed alarms. This indicates that it may be related to do not disturb mode on the device and the Google clock which does not override any system settings. However, it is not clear if this is what affects devices from other OEMs.
Fortunately, Google is aware of the broken Clock app with the IssueTracker theme extension (h / t XDA) noting that the issue has been “shared with our product and engineering teams”. Updates will be shared “as more information becomes available”. At least until a solution is found, it may be worth trying another alarm app to be 100% sure you wake up on time.
