The two friends met in 2016
Pop singer Britney Spears has announced her engagement to Sam Asgari, with whom she is longtime friends.
The singer posted a video of the two of them together, showing off their engagement ring on Instagram.
Spears is in a legal battle to end his 13-year-old guardianship, which controls his personal and financial life.
Spears revealed that the terms of the deal made it impossible for her to marry Mr. Asgari or have any other children.
Trusteeship provisions were imposed in 2008, when concerns were raised about the singer’s mental health.
Asghari, 27, who is a private athletics trainer and actor, posted a separate photo showing the ring and the couple kissing.
The two met on the set of a music video for Spears in 2016.
Asgari manager Brandon Cohen confirmed the engagement news to People magazine.
“The couple formalized their long-term relationship today and were deeply moved by the support, dedication and love expressed (from the public) for them,” he said.
The 39-year-old has been married twice before, the first time in 2004 when she married childhood friend Jason Alexander in Las Vegas, but they quickly ended the marriage.
Later that year, she married dancer Kevin Federline, with whom she had two children, and the couple divorced in 2007.
Last week, the singer’s father, Jamie Spears, filed papers in a Los Angeles court to end custody of his daughter. Britney has sought to remove him from the role twice in the past two years.
Britney Spears has previously called her father’s treatment “cruel”. In July, she told a judge she wanted to accuse her father of breaking guardianship rules.
Court-ordered guardianship gave Jamie Spears control over his daughter’s property and other aspects of her life. Spears’ father stepped down from his role as guardian of his daughter’s personal affairs in 2019 due to health concerns, but continued to oversee her working arrangements.
