A 3D map shows the miles of cables lying on the ocean floor, containing a world of information running through them.
The amazing map shows how our world is mired in cables beneath the waves, with hundreds of fiber optic cables connecting the planet to a highly interconnected information network.
The data was visualized by programmer Tyler Morgan Wall, using a simple script and GeoJSON (Open Source Format for Geographical Feature Visualization) software.
The data used to create the map comes from Submarine Cable Map, a website operated by TeleGeography, Intel’s geodata company.
According to TeleGeography, there are 426 active submarine cables around the world. The cables are often the diameter of a garden hose and are filled with strands the width of a human hair.
The cables are located at the bottom of the ocean and would extend over 807,000 miles. Some are very short, connecting the islands for a few kilometers like the one that stretches between Ireland and the United Kingdom. Others, like the one that connects Asia to the United States, are over 10,000 miles long.
