Prime Minister calls for strengthening prevention and treatment of HIV / AIDS
BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) – Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has called for improved prevention and treatment of HIV / AIDS before the 31st World AIDS Day, to be held on December 1st.
Mr. Li, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said in his presentation that China still has difficulties in preventing and treating HIV / AIDS, although it could maintain the disease at a low prevalence rate.
Mr. Li urged the relevant authorities to improve the overall system of disease prevention and control, to continue to focus on the situation of vulnerable populations or in key areas during the milestones, and to strengthen surveillance capacities, early warning and intervention.
He also stressed that it was important to focus on the implementation of policies related to the supply of medicines, health insurance, medical assistance, to improve public education, strengthen scientific research and international cooperation on the disease.
A report released at the 5th National HIV / AIDS Conference in September found that 820,756 Chinese people were living with HIV / AIDS and 25,303 people died of AIDS-related illnesses at the end of June.
