In the United States, a team of researchers has created a new inexpensive medical dressing that can help heal wounds at a surprising rate.
The technology developed by researchers at the University of Wisconsin in Madison is based on the production of electricity based on the movement of the human body and uses it to give electrical impulses through the bandage up to the position of the wound.
Experiments have shown that new dressings reduce wound healing time to just three days, compared to two weeks with conventional treatments.
"We were surprised by the rapid healing rate of wounds," said Chudong Wang, professor of materials science and engineering at the University of Wisconsin Madison. We expected the dressing to actually improve recovery, but we were not expecting such a quick recovery. "
Scientific studies have shown decades ago that electricity can help heal skin wounds, but most of the devices used to produce electricity for this purpose are bulky and require complex connections. which makes it difficult to use everyday.
According to Wang, the new technology easily uses the same traditional medical dressings.
He explained that the new dressings contain electrodes connected to micro-generation units installed around the patient's chest by medical tape. Electricity is generated according to the movement of the chest cavity during breathing and is used to direct small impulses to the wound position.
"The nature of these impulses is similar to the way the body uses an internal electric field," Wang explains. "This technique does not harm healthy body organs, unlike other medical devices that use a strong current.
