United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterich said that efforts to combat HIV / AIDS were now at a crossroads, 30 years after the first World Day to fight HIV / AIDS, and that the fight against HIV / AIDS has become a reality. it was essential to put an end to the elimination of AIDS by 2030 or to future generations. Will continue to bear the burden of this devastating disease.
More than 77 million people have been infected with the virus, more than 35 million have died as a result of AIDS and despite notable advances in diagnosis and treatment, Guterich said in his message on the occasion of the World AIDS Day, distributed by the United Nations Information Office in Cairo. And the success of prevention efforts to prevent millions of new infections, the pace of progress is not at the level of global ambition, new HIV infections do not decline fast enough, control efforts are at the in some regions and financial resources are insufficient.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations noted that stigma and discrimination continued to be an obstacle for individuals, especially large groups, including homosexuals, sex workers, heterosexuals, drug addicts, prisoners, migrants, young women and adolescents. This prevents them from making informed decisions about prevention, treatment and other care and support services.
"There is still time to extend the tests to detect the virus, provide treatment to more people, increase the resources needed to prevent new infections and eliminate stigma," Guterich said, calling for a decisive moment to engage in the right way.
