Spanish researchers said the key to avoiding premature death was to climb four stairs without stopping.
The researchers tested the theory on about 13,000 people and found that people with difficulty climbing stairs were three times more likely to have heart disease and twice as likely to die of cancer.
The study says the results "provide further evidence of the benefits of exercise and fitness, for health and longevity".
In addition to maintaining one's weight, physical activity has positive effects on blood pressure and fats, reduces inflammation and improves the immune system's response to tumors.
Researchers from the Coruña University Hospital in Galicia have analyzed the cases of people with coronary artery disease.
The study, presented at the exhibition "EuroEcho-Imaging 2018" in Milan, was led by the cardiologist and associate professor, Dr. Jesus Petero.
Participants were invited to walk or run on the treadmill, gradually increasing their intensity until they reached the point of exhaustion.
During the exercise, participants were connected to an ECG device that uses sound waves to create heart-sized images showing the size and shape of the heart, as well as the quality of the heart valves.
During the study, 1253 participants died from cardiovascular disease, 670 from cancer and 650 from other causes.
After adjusting for factors including age and sex, each test measure performed during the test was associated with a reduction in the risk of death due to cardiovascular disease or cancer by 9%.
The risk of death from cardiovascular disease was approximately three times higher for participants whose functional capacity was impaired.
Non-cardiac and non-cancer deaths were nearly three times higher for those who performed poorly than those who functioned well.
The European Society of Cardiology recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise a week, or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity a week.
