One study found that daily consumption of a glass of orange juice can significantly reduce the risk of dementia.
The researchers followed nearly 28,000 men for two decades to determine how they were eating fruits and vegetables, according to Daily Mail.
The researchers found that men who drank a small glass of orange juice were 47 percent less likely to remember, follow instructions, or move to known areas.
Memory disturbances, comprehension and episodes of confusion can be early signs of brain damage, possibly leading to life-threatening dementia.
The number of people with dementia worldwide is estimated at 46.8 million. We still can not cure this disease, but scientists are trying to find an effective treatment to eliminate dementia.
These new findings confirm the importance of a healthy diet to eliminate brain degeneration that accompanies age.
"Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins and nutrients, including antioxidants that can help protect the brain," said Dr. Hannah Gardner, a researcher at the University of Miami who did not participated in the research.
These health benefits can protect the brain from the accumulation of unwanted molecules and maintain adequate blood flow to the brain.
The main author of the study, Zhang Chengyuan, said that long-term consumption of fruits, vegetables and orange juice could contribute to the maintenance of cognitive function.
