The Supreme Committee of Qatari Projects and Heritage revealed the design of the Lusail stadium for the opening and closing matches of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
According to the committee, the stadium has a capacity of 80,000 spectators, the largest stadium to host the final. In addition to the opening and final matches, the stadium will host several matches during the tournament.
The design was unveiled at a ceremony held in the Lusail Marina in the presence of Qatar's Emir Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani and political figures such as the Secretary-General of the United Nations. United Antonio Guterich, the Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Turkish counterpart Mouloud Chaochoglu.
The High Commission is expecting the construction of the stadium to be completed in 2020 and is being implemented by a consortium of HSBC and Qatar Railways.
The stadium is derived from the modern city of Lusail, currently under construction north of Doha, with a total area of 38 square kilometers and comprising 4 islands and 19 commercial, residential and leisure areas.
Lusail is the name of one of the few flowers that grow in Qatar.
