Scientists say that treating itchy skin is imminent and that a new way to treat this disease has recently been discovered by highlighting the area of allergies.
Tests on mice allergic to the skin showed a marked improvement in these mice after undergoing the new treatment, reported the Daily Mail.
According to scientists, this new method represents hope for many people suffering from chronic skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, which cause severe itching.
Researchers at the European Microbiology Laboratory in Rome have begun to research root causes of itching and find appropriate treatment.
After several experiments, the scientists developed a light-sensitive chemical called IL31-IR700 and injected it into the skin of the mice before they irradiated the infrared skin for a short time.
"The infrared activates a molecule called photosensitizer that acts to eliminate the itchiness," said Dr. Paul Hibenstol, one of the researchers involved in the study.
"This process is called dynamic phototherapy and was originally developed to fight and kill cancer cells, and by applying them to the skin we can destroy the nerve cells responsible for itching.
The new method clearly worked in mice with eczema and did not negatively affect other neurons in the skin. "
Scientists say that they still need to do more tests to make sure that the efficacy and safety of treatment are humane.
