A recent study indicates that increasing body weight accounts for about 4% of all cancer cases worldwide and a significant proportion of malignancies diagnosed in developing countries.

In 2012, weight gain was responsible for 544,300 cancer cases diagnosed worldwide each year, researchers said in the journal Cancer Journal for Clinicians.

While overweight and obese people accounted for only 1% of cancers in low-income countries, they accounted for 7-8% of cancers diagnosed in some Western high-income countries, the Middle East and North Africa.

"Many people are unaware of the link between weight gain and cancer," said Song Huawana, who headed the study group of the American Cancer Society in Atlanta.

"Trying to maintain and maintain a healthy weight is important and can reduce the risk of cancer," she said in an email.
