Scientists have announced a major breakthrough in the fight against HIV "AIDS".
Scientists from the Institut Pasteur in Paris, the French capital, said they managed to destroy the virus-infected cells, which are usually treated with antiretrovirals.
Existing drugs are known to fail to rid the body of the virus, but the medical journal "Cell Metabolism" published the results of the study, revealing that scientists had reached an effective way of eliminating the infected cells.
"Thanks to the inhibitors of metabolic activity, scientists have been able to destroy these infected cells, thus opening up the possibility of developing new ways of treatment," the study said.
In a newsletter sent to EurekaAlert, a spokeswoman for the Pasteur Institute said: "The antiretroviral therapy used today is designed to treat HIV infection, but it does not allow the body to get rid of it completely.
The virus remains in the reservoirs, the CD4 T lymphocyte, the main target of HIV. "
Scientists are now looking to evaluate metabolic inhibitors in the body. In theory, if the level of viral activity is low, the destruction of the cell in which HIV hides and derives energy can prevent its spread in the body and destroy it completely.
It should be noted that HIV targets cells with high metabolic activity and "exploits" their energy for reproduction.
The study is funded by the Institut Pasteur and the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AMFAR), as well as by Sidaction.
