Researchers at Rice University in the United States have found that the risk of premature death among widows (men or women) is increasing.

They noted that the state of tension that develops in people who have lost loved ones leads to negative changes in the body, resulting in serious illnesses, according to the site "sciencealert".

About 100 volunteers who recently lost a heart in the last three months participated in the study; they were tested for anxiety after losing their life partner.

Blood samples were taken and analyzed to see if the depressed state of mind had generated changes in the body.

People who lost a loved one ran a higher risk of premature death, as well as high proportion of protein causing serious infections.

The experts compared the results of their research with previous findings of similar studies, showing that widows are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease and are therefore more likely to die prematurely.

On the basis of the data obtained, the specialists hope to develop effective methods of care for these patients.
