Use artificial intelligence techniques to predict cancer symptoms

Including depression, stress and sleep disorders

London: Middle East

Researchers from the British University of Surrey have come up with a new artificial intelligence system capable of predicting the symptoms and severity of cancer patients during a patient's treatment trip, allowing so doctors start treating these symptoms early.
The research team of the University's Research Center on Research, Speech and Importance has designed two artificial intelligence systems capable of accurately predicting three common symptoms in patients cancer – depression, stress and sleep disorders. According to the German news agency, these three symptoms are linked to a sudden deterioration in the quality of life of cancer patients.
The study team analyzed the data already available on the symptoms of a cancer patient in the radiotherapy phase. The team relied on data spanning different time periods to determine if the algorithm on which the artificial intelligence system is based can actually predict the onset of these symptoms or if they are emerging from the baseline.
The study, conducted in collaboration with the University of Surrey and California, San Francisco, revealed that the results of the artificial intelligence system were very close to the actual symptoms that occurred in patients.
"These exciting results show that artificial intelligence techniques have a real chance of improving the lot of people with cancer," said Bryan Barnage, Artificial Intelligence Specialist at the University of Surrey. Physicians identify the patients most likely to develop symptoms and help them develop proactive treatment plans to treat and overcome these symptoms.
