Researchers from eSet, a company specializing in cybersecurity, discovered last December that a new malware based on a Trojan horse running on the Android operating system was stealing from money directly to PayPal accounts because it was able to bypass PayPal's 2FA binary authentication feature.
Malware resides in the third party Android Optimization Android Battery Optimization application, which has used dozens of battery optimization apps for Android devices with the same logo, in addition to similar names to a large extent.
Once the Android Optimization app is installed on Android devices, the user must run an access service under the name Enable Statistics. If the user has enabled the service, the Application verifies the existence of the official PayPal application and if it finds the malicious application executed, PayPal sends a notice inviting to open the application.
Once the user opens the PayPal application and enters his 2FA authentication code, the activated malware access service takes action that mimic the user by clicking to send money to the PayPal address of the attacker.
Fortunately, this app is currently only available in third-party app stores, and not in the official Google Play store, which means that very few people have been touched by their phone until they reach their location. now, according to Arab Technology News.
