Former South African international striker Vile Masinga has died at 49, the South African Football Association announced Sunday.
Massinga played for Leeds United between 1994 and 1996, as well as for Switzerland's Sant Gallen, Salernitana and Bari.
"A sad day for South African football," said Danny Jordan, president of the South African Football Association.
"He is a loyal football player both inside and outside the stadium."
Massinga made his first appearance in South Africa in July 1992 against Cameroon.
Massinga is known for his goal against Congo, giving South Africa their first participation at the 1998 World Cup.
Massinga joined South Africa for the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996. Massinga played 31 games with Leeds United and scored five goals.
