Scientists have discovered that bills or receipts that use an ink that fades over time use "thermal paper" containing the dangerous chemical, bisphenol (BPA).
Studies have shown that this chemical can lead to hormone-sensitive cancers and is associated with infertility, autism, obesity, type 2 diabetes, early births, and early puberty.
On many occasions, the public has been warned of exposure to this dangerous substance, which is often found in plastic.
The British Daily Mail Professor, quoted by Professor Nicholas Olia of the University of Granada in Spain, said that it was necessary to avoid storing receipts in wallets or cars.
Pisphenol is added to the labels to make the writing darker without ink, as well as in plastic water bottles and food containers.
"We can recognize this type of paper as soon as it is placed in front of a heat source because it becomes immediately black," said Professor Olia.
"Tickets should not come in contact with food, such as meat or fish, nor should they be thrown in the trash for trash, play, write notes or put in cars or handbags – in short, we need to take care of it – type of tickets as little as possible.
The French government has taken steps to limit the use of this chemical compound in thermal paper since 2014.
International researchers led by the University of Granada analyzed 112 receipts and thermal paper tickets from Brazil, Spain and France.
The study found that 90% of the invoices from Brazil and Spain contained dangerous bisphosphonol and that 50% of the invoices came from a substance containing this substance.
