Scientists believe that the number of rock bodies hitting the ground has declined compared to the past, but a recent study published in Thursday's Science magazine has proved the opposite.
The number of asteroids (which can be very small rock particles) over the last 290 million years was twice as large as in the previous 700 million years.
This is probably due to large-scale space accidents in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
"These incidents have led to the creation of a wave of space-related rocks that will reach its peak and then retreat," said Tom Grenon, one of the study's authors. .
The researchers do not study any connection between the rise of these rocks and the major events that have touched the Earth, such as the asteroid crash that caused the great extinction of the living species 252 million years ago, under the effect of a large object and not small rocks.
To calculate the frequency of accidents, scientists counted the number of craters and their age on the moon, which is exposed to what the Earth is exposed to.
"The moon has seen what is happening on the ground and it helps us understand what's going on," says William Bouteck, an asteroid expert at the Southwest Institute of America.
Scientists thought that the number of old nozzles on the ground had been caused by erosion, but researchers found in a recent study that the reason was actually some incidents.
Scientists have pointed out that the high frequency of small astronomical impacts on Earth should not be a cause for concern, as the US Space Agency constantly monitors any crime of more than 30 meters in diameter.
