The Argentine striker was on his way from Nantes to Cardiff, where he is preparing to join his new team.
Emilyano Sala, Cardiff's new striker, may have died as a result of an airplane crash near Alderney Island in the Channel Islands.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) announced that Sala was one of two people to board a small plane, the Piper Malibu, before it crashed near the Kaskitis lighthouse on Monday night.
The BBC has announced that a Coast Guard helicopter was looking for the missing, as well as a crew from the Alderney Island, near the Kaskets lighthouse.
A spokesman for the Coast Guard said that the plane was not in the UK but that two helicopters had been sent to help with the search.
A Bureau of Meteorology official confirmed that the atmosphere was not bad at that time and that the wind speed was not very good.
Sala, 28, joined Cardiff during the Nantes Mercato winter for 17 million euros.
Argentina also represented Bordeaux and was also in the French league before moving to the Premiership.
During the season, Sala played 21 games with Nantes, scoring 13 goals and two goals, including Monaco, Marseille and Hattrick.
