Ronaldo pleads guilty in a case of tax evasion and pays a fine
Cristiano Ronaldo was fined and suspended for a tax evasion case in Spain on Tuesday and signed an amicable settlement, which will cost 18.8 million euros (21, $ 4 million).
Ronaldo was in court in Madrid to face charges of tax evasion during his nine years in the Champions League, where he was the club's top scorer. Ronaldo smiled but made no comment when he entered the field.
Last year, the Portuguese striker reached an agreement with the Spanish authorities to settle the case in exchange for the payment of the fine and the acceptance of a 23-month suspended sentence.
But Ronaldo, 33, will not spend time in jail, as Spanish law states that any sentence of less than two years to the first offense can be removed.
In 2017, Ronaldo denied accusations that he planned to hide his income in Spain between 2011 and 2014.
The Spanish Attorney General said that last week, Ronaldo had paid 5.7 million euros (5.5 million euros) of fine plus one million euros from his wife. interest in July 2018.
Earlier, Xabi Alonso, Ronaldo's former colleague in Chelsea, also appeared in court for another tax evasion case, in which the prosecutor is seeking a five-year sentence of imprisonment and a fine four million euros.
Alonso, winner of the Spain World Cup and retired in 2017, has been accused of tax evasion, fraud and non-payment of around 2 million euros between 2010 and 2012. But he repeatedly denied any reprehensible act.
