BANGKOK: The Thai government announced on Tuesday that it would not press the criminal court to release Bahraini footballer Hakeem al-Ureybi.
This was in response to the request of the Australian Government in Bangkok to release the Bahraini player and not to surrender him to the authorities of his country.
A few days after the Thai criminal court accepted Ureybi's extradition at Manama's request to the Thai authorities on Jan. 18, the local press reported.
Thai authorities arrested 25-year-old Oreibi in November, on notification from the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), when he arrived in Thailand with his wife for honeymoon.
In 2014, a Bahraini court sentenced Oreibi, aged 10, to imprisonment in absentia for "sabotaging a police station".
Thailand's Minister of Tourism and Sports, Wirasak Kusurat, said on Tuesday that the government "would not exert any pressure on the criminal court to decide the fate of the detained refugee in the capital Bangkok."
"The criminal court treats the case in accordance with the international principle, and the government will respect the court's judgment and not pressurize it," Kosorat said at a cabinet meeting.
Thai Foreign Minister Don Bramodwini said that Australia and Bahrain should discuss the issue of Uribi bilaterally.
On Monday, Oreibi said on arrival at court, handcuffed to attend a hearing: "Please, do not send me to Bahrain" for fear of being subjected to torture.
On 28 January, the Bahraini Ministry of the Interior announced that it was "suing" the applicant, Hakim Oreibi, a Thai detainee.
The asylum seeker sought asylum in Australia following the announcement of torture in Bahraini prisons during his detention in 2012.
Last year, Australia was granted the status of "political refugee" by Oreibi, a former player on the Bahraini national team, who has long criticized the ruling family in his country. (Anatolia)
