Swiss President Gianni Infantino has been in office for four years after the expiry of his current term. No other candidates ran in the elections later this year.

Only 48-year-old Infantino, with the required papers, had respected the deadline until Tuesday, the German news agency DPA told FIFA sources.

Infantino still has to meet the eligibility and integrity criteria before the vote at the FIFA General Assembly in Paris on June 5th.

He was elected FIFA President in February 2016 to complete the term of former President Joseph Blatter, who is suspended in the corruption case at FIFA.

He has enjoyed considerable support from many of the 211 national associations of FIFA, even though he faces a European opposition.

Critics of the European Union against Infanteño are notably linked to FIFA's efforts to accept a $ 25 billion financing from investors, whose identity is unknown. Has not yet been revealed, in order to proceed to large extensions for the World Cup clubs and the launch of the World League.

This funding would include the sale of the rights of all major players in the FIFA group.

Under the reign of Infantino, the decision to extend the 2026 World Cup to America, Canada and Mexico was seen as evidence of the participation of 48 teams instead of 32.
