An alarming study has revealed that the Earth's oceans could lose their distinctive blue color in just 80 years.

MIT researchers have revealed that climate change is altering phytoplankton and affecting the color of the ocean.

This indicates that the blue and green regions of the ocean will see intensities of color, according to the researchers.

In the study, the research team used computer models, based on expected climate change. They discovered that by 2100, more than 50% of the world's oceans would be altered by climate change, according to Dr. Stephanie Dutcic, who led the study.

Blue areas are expected to become more bluish, reflecting a smaller amount of phytoplankton, and green areas turning dark green, as warmer temperatures release large amounts of phytoplankton.

Phytoplankton contain chlorophyll, a pigment that is absorbed mainly in the blue parts of the scattered sun and in smaller amounts in the green parts.

As a result, more green is reflected in the ocean, giving areas rich in seaweed a green color.
