Gulf News Scientists discover a "zombie cell" that causes all kinds of cancers

Scientists have discovered the "original cell" at the origin of any type of known cancer, an important step in the beginning of a long way in search of a cure for the disease deadly. Researchers at the Center for Biomedical Research at the University of Salford think their findings are "a needle in a haystack". They explained that their tests show that this particular cell comes out of a "favorable" state and stabilizes before multiplying and causing a tumor.

"We have found the beginning of the road and we will have to press the control button again to find out how cancer is treated with drugs," said Professor Michael Lesanty, lead author of the study. Scientists talk in particular about cancer caused by dead cells returning to life, or cells called "zombies". They see the situation more dramatic than before, these cells being more accurately described as a prisoner between two bars perfectly monitored. Cellular test

The scientific team discovered this cell by examining a line of cancer cells extracted from human breast tissue. They isolated the most active cells and examined them to find out if they had more energy than the cancer cells. The examination was laboratory in terms of proliferation rate and ability to create swelling, as well as examination of mitochondria work, center of cell energy production and its deactivation.

"If you ask me where these cells come from, the evidence suggests that they appear as dying cells," said Professor Federica Sotjia, another member of the research team. "Although it seems like we have found the local needle in the haystack, it gives us a new window on cancer and how we can stop it." Most cancer patients die because of the spread of cancer cells to other sites of the body, called cancer cell migration.
