New scientific study has revealed new and exciting results for treating tuberculosis, indicating that vitamin D helps to speed up the elimination of TB bacteria from the patient's lungs, particularly MDR-TB, according to the US medical website "Medicalxpress".
In a study of more than 1,850 patients receiving antibiotic therapy, conducted by Queen Mary University in London, the researchers reported that MDR-TB was at its highest level and was difficult to treat, far worse than normal tuberculosis.
"Our study suggests that vitamin D is very safe and inexpensive and that it can benefit the group of hard-to-treat patients by adopting a new approach to their treatment," said Dr. Adrian Martino of the University of Toronto. Queen Mary University in London.
"By adding vitamin D to antibiotic treatment, we can boost immunity by helping the body eliminate TB, instead of relying solely on antibiotics to kill bacteria," said Martino.
The World Health Organization estimates that 10.0 million people developed active TB in 2017 and that 1.6 million people died as a result of the disease.
