The governing body of the European Football Confederation (UEFA) announced a refereeing change between Ajax Amsterdam and Real Madrid in the knockout stages of the Champions League on Wednesday.
The Polish Simon Marchenyak, who was to lead the match as a referee, will be the referee of the VAR and Slovenian Damir Skomina will be appointed referee of the match at the Johan Cruyff stadium in Amsterdam.
The 16th round of the Champions League this season will see the introduction of video assistance technology for the first time in the history of the competition.
Sommina, 42, who took the whistle in place of Marciniak, has played eight previous matches with the Royal team.
Real Madrid have won 6 matches under the referee of Sommina, most recently with a 3-1 victory over Napoli in the round of 16 of the 16th edition of 2017.
By contrast, the Spaniards have managed four games for Ajax, the Dutch team won a 2-1 match against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the European League in 2012.
