MADRID: Real Madrid's hopes of winning the Primera Liga title have been badly hit by Girona's surprise 2-1 defeat, which missed the home goal to concede two goals in the second half on Sunday.

The gap widened to nine points between Real, who fell to third place and the Barcelona leader out of 24.

Real looked on the verge of victory after finishing the first period with a header from midfielder Casimiro.

But Girona, who had not won a championship this year before today 's match, was back in Santiago Bernabeu after the break.

Christian Stoane scored a penalty in the 65th minute and Christian Portugues scored a 10-minute victory.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos was sent off in the 89th minute and goalkeeper Tibo Cortua nearly scored the equalized goal when he conceded and headed for the attack but headed past at the last minute. (Reuters)
