Scientists at Strathclyde University have developed a new 72-hour infection test, which can give a reliable result in just 3 minutes.
The test can save thousands of lives from a deadly disease, hoping to be available in British health services from here 3 to 5 years.
The new low-cost test uses a biometric sensor to determine if the interleukin-6 protein index is present in the blood, a molecule produced by the immune system and often elevated in people with sepsis.
During the study, the test, which comes in the form of a needle that can be inserted into the body of patients, was controlled by Interleukin 6 protein in two and a half minutes.
"Time is very important for the treatment of sepsis, because with each hour of delay, the probability of death increases, and the new test can monitor the levels of vital signs of decay among doctors and nurses," said Dr. Damyon Corrigan of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Strathclyde.
Sepsis symptoms include excessive body temperature or abnormality, rapid heart rate, and rapid breathing.
