The Ministry of Health and Population of Aden, the political capital of southern Yemen ad interim, in cooperation with the World Health Organization and UNICEF, launched on Saturday the first round of cholera vaccination campaign targeting three governorates.
"The campaign launched today to vaccinate against cholera targets 480,000 people aged 12 months and over and will continue until February 28," said Dr. Ali Alwaleed, Under Secretary of Health Care at the Ministry of Health.
Al-Walidi said in a statement to the "New Arab": "The campaign targets four directions in three governorates, the direction of Dar Saad in the province of Aden (south) and the direction of Cairo in the province of Taiz (south) The ministry had already conducted a similar campaign in several districts of the interim capital Aden and in some districts of Ibb province (center).
Al-Walidi explained that the process of selecting the target areas for the implementation of the campaign is in line with the mechanism followed and agreed with the immunization group, represented by the World Health Organization, l & # 39; UNICEF and the Yemeni Ministry of Health, as well as the rest of the partners because of the limited amount of vaccine against the disease. He said a new amount of vaccine was requested to cover the second phase of the campaign in the coming months, after the Ministry of Health sent 510,000 doses of vaccine to the targeted directions in the first phase.
Al-Walidi pointed out that the current campaign represents the first round of the vaccination campaign, which aims to prevent targeted people for two months, and that a second round of campaign aimed at protecting the target for two years.
Al-Walidi said that the Ministry of Health had registered more than one million suspected cases of illness in several governorates from October 2016 to February, confirming that he had been able to reduce the the spread of the disease in the liberated areas and that the current campaigns were intended solely for prevention.
"The problem persists in Houthi-controlled areas, where the disease is still spreading.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the total number of cases and suspected cases of cholera in the past year was 295,000, of which 400 died, of which one-third children under five years old. According to UNHCR, the infection rate has decreased by 75% in 2018 compared to 2017.
