Chinese scientists develop a new sense of smell

BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) – Chinese scientists have come up with a new test to assess the meaning of Chinese smell, which can help diagnose and treat neurological and mental illnesses.

Scientists from the Institute of Psychology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences said that the deterioration of the senses and the loss of sense of smell could affect the quality of life or even endanger it in situations such as gas leaks.

Research has shown that in people with natural intelligence and over 65 years old, people with olfactory problems were 2.5 times more likely to die in 4 years than those with a natural sense of smell.

Detoxification also represents the first clinical symptom of major neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. Odor problems are also associated with other diseases such as schizophrenia, severe depression and other mental disorders.

The scientists said that people do not usually realize that they have lost their sense of smell and that it is necessary to objectively evaluate the sense of smell.

Scientists from the United States, Germany and Japan have developed olfactory assessment tests. However, odor identification depends on each person's experience and is also influenced by one's own culture. These tests can not be applied directly to the Chinese, who make up one-fifth of the world's population.

Scientists from the Institute of Psychology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) have developed the Chinese Aromatherapy Test, which includes 40 well-known Chinese scents.

The scientists said that the accuracy of the Chinese smell test was 15% higher than other tests developed by US and German scientists, which means that the Chinese test is more culturally appropriate for Chinese.

The new test is an effective clinical tool for assessing the sense of Chinese sense of smell.
