EU health officials said the spread of supernatural bacteria, antimicrobial resistance, could worsen, making it more difficult to treat food poisoning and other infections.
EU Health and Food Safety Commissioner Fétène Andriucaitis said that after the publication of data on the increase in antimicrobial resistance, it could trigger an alarm in the region.

"It seems like we are entering a world where the treatment of more and more common diseases is difficult and sometimes impossible."
Drug resistance develops because of the misuse or overuse of antibiotics or other antimicrobial drugs, which encourages bacteria to develop to survive by finding new ways to overcome the problem.

The report of the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the European Food Safety Authority analyzed the 2017 data on antimicrobial resistance collected from the 28 countries of the bloc.

The report concluded that resistance to bacteria known as Campilobacter and that can infect humans through food poisoning of an antibiotic is severe in some countries to the point that these drugs are no longer effective in the treatment of severe cases.
